We are having a quiet earthquake week. Of course we would like it to be quiet in terms of earthquakes. But I don't think it should be this quiet for engineers. I don't understand the insensitivity of non-governmental and professional organizations that take to the streets, line up on the streets and carry banners about irrelevant issues. Where is public awareness, where is the education of the engineer? Programs do the calculation and drawing part of the job. They show simple cross-section calculations at school, and it's over. Since we have a diploma, we became an engineer. So why can't we design earthquake resistant structures still properly? Some think that they guarantee themselves with excessively large sections, some force the minimum sections and take risks by leaning on the program. Others are unaware of the geometry, design, and behavior trilogy. Is earthquake week just a celebration of disaster directorates? How do we save them alive from under the rubble? Or is it the rhetoric of IMO saying how many construction supervisors you have, you earned money from the construction site supervisor, why didn't you give it to us, is the earthquake week celebration. Or is it the earthquake week celebration that the chamber of architects, which sent a letter to all its members this week, scares its members by saying "if you don't pay, we will sue you". Or is it the week of earthquakes for those who rejoice that they have crossed a span of 10 m with a 30 cm beam? Or maybe it's the week of earthquakes for those who say "what is the need for iron, this building will pull 15 times with this iron". No, no, maybe not all that. Maybe municipalities; Is it the week of the earthquake that they think "yes, we have put an extra document in the file, now we have just connected the engineer". Or is it the fact that everyone is trying to spend the morning prayer in the mosque, despite the earthquake and turmoil, like the morning of August 17th? Is it the week of the earthquake that we leave our work to Allah by saying "If we die, let's die in the mosque"... With love and respect... N. YILMAZ
