Hello, I would like to ask a question about the 2018 earthquake code conditions regarding the use of polygonal columns. The situation in the 2007 earthquake code was as follows,

As it turns out, what There is no requirement for polygon columns in the 2007 nor 2018 earthquake codes. Can a polygon column be designed like the one below?

In the project where we can use 70x30 columns, we can use a polygon column as in the figure. is there any problem? One of the arms is 25cm, but the TS500 can allow up to 20cm.

Hello there; Clearly according to TBDY2018 you cannot make a polygon column like this. Article open polygon column or not, the short side of the column cannot be less than 30 cm. Best regards.

Same in 2007 regulation Although there is a clause in the article, it was stated in Mr. Adem Doğangün's book on the calculation and design of reinforced concrete structures that 20 cm polygonal columns could be built. In addition, the regulation specifically specified rectangular columns.

Hello there; I think the reason in the book of Adem teacher should be consulted with him. In the same book, it is written that the columns were made 20 cm so that there would be no teeth on the wall, and that this behavior should be abandoned. Let's take the column in the picture; it is not rectangular but not circular, so can the short side of this column be made 25cm? But I think you want to do it and you are looking for a solution that supports your request. If so, Adam's book is a good reference. Best regards.

I wouldn't want to have to reduce the column to 30x70, but since the viewpoint is like yours, we closed this issue with a smaller column. It was not a situation we wanted to increase the console length on normal floors. We will order the 15th edition book of Adam's brain and have a look.

Polygon column cross-section conditions. It is stated in TBDY 2018 article 7.3.1.1 that the smallest cross-section size of rectangular columns shall not be less than 300 mm and the diameter of circular columns shall not be less than 350 mm. Min. What are the cross-sectional conditions? Good work, take it easy.
